While diving in Raja Ampat there are plenty of unique marine creatures to see. One of the most impressive is the black manta rays that are abundant in the area. In fact, a study by Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) found that up to 40% of the population of manta rays in Raja Ampat are black. The second largest population (16%) of black mantas is thousands of miles away in Equador. So, what causes these mantas to have such a special colouring and why are they so numerous in Raja Ampat. Raja Ampat is famous for its endless number of dive sites. Gangga Divers at Papua Paradise Eco Resort doesn’t always hit the most well known spots, but sometimes the most popular sites really are unmissable. Kepulauan Fam, or the Fam Islands are a group of islands northwest of Batanta Island, in the straits between Waigeo and Batanta. Dugongs are notoriously shy, but we are lucky enough to spot them quite regularly at Papua Paradise Eco Resort. Some fortunate guests have been able to watch them feeding on the house reef right below their over-water bungalows.
